When AIDS and HIV first came to the media’s attention, there was near hysteria.

Hardly a day went by without some kind of tabloid headline about the new epidemic.

But since then, things have calmed down. Most people seem to think that the epilepsy handbook health issue treatment woman is under control.

That is certainly not the case in Scotland, where are 3857 people with AIDS.

The numbers of people infected with HIV each year has risen from 154 in 2000 to 259 in 2003.

Huge rise in infection

In February 2004 a report from the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health claims that the problem could get even worse.

They looked at the number of people being infected with syphilis. Reported cases increased by 56% between 2002 and 2003.

More than half of them were reported in Glasgow and nearly 70% of them involved men who have sex with men.

The Centre says syphilis is a good indicator of how many people are engaging in high risk sexual behaviour.

Their report points out that; “it would not be surprising if the incidence of HIV among gay men in the West of Scotland had also increased in the last two years.”

But because it takes a while for the symptoms of HIV infection to come through, the numbers might not show up for some time to come.

A recent survey by ISIS Research suggests that most HIV specialists believe there is a need for the Government to launch a new health man health nutrition
campaign to increase awareness of HIV.

Of the 30 doctors surveyed, only 7% felt that there was no need for a new campaign.

But what else could the Scottish Executive do to raise people’s awareness about the dangers of HIV infection and the need to practice safe sex?

Reporter Amber Henshaw has been to Glasgow to find out.

“We were sleeping in separate beds and very nearly split up,” said 48-year-old Keith, who has type 1 diabetes.

“It did nearly drive us to divorce. I would not go to bed with her. I would not even hold hands with her.

“She kept trying to speak to me about it, but I did not want to.”

The couple drifted further and further apart, with Keith spending more and more time on his picture framing work.

GP appointment

Eventually Keith, from Mitcham, Surrey, plucked up the courage to talk to his local GP.

“He was not much help and said that because I had such a bad back that a man in my position should not be having sex anyway.”

Keith was devastated and it was sometime before he felt able to mention the problem to his diabetic nurse.

“Someone had told me she could get me referred to a urologist, which she did,” he said.

“If I had just known that a couple of months before - I was practically suicidal.

“Although sex is not the be all and end all of relationships, it is a bond.”

“Nobody had told me that this might have been a side effect,” said Keith. “Or if they did I had not taken it in.

“I found it very difficult to control my diabetes and developed an eye condition and then neuropathy (nerve damage). I have no feeling in my legs from my toes to my knees.”

Keith’s urologist presribed him a raft of ‘pills and potions’, but none worked for long.

Keith was given a penile implant - which allows men, through the use of a pump, to control their own erection allowing them to pump up then deflate.

“Now everything is fine. It has changed my life,” said Keith, from Surrey.

But he said he was angry with himself for not seeking help sooner.

This week Diabetes UK is launching a new website - Sex and Diabetes - to help people like Keith get speedy information on a 39 health magazine man s

The site is designed to provide a wide range of information on diabetes and sexual health, focusing on ED and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and illustrates them with ‘true life stories’.

It looks at what could be the causes and how to treat them as well as where to go to get help.

There is also information for health care professionals.

Tracy Kelly, dietician and care advisor for Diabetes UK, said this was an area which had been neglected.

“Diabetics are all told about it when they are diagnosed, but some people are embarassed to talk about it.

“Also they get a lot of information all at once and as with any life-long condition it is better to get the information in little chunks.”

Tracy said these are subjects that can be raised when diabetics have their regular check-ups.

“As this is quite a sensitive issue and people are not going to bring it up straight away.

“We need to be able to say to people not that it will happen, but that it is part and parcel of the condition.”

And she said that one of the main benefits of the website is the patients can look it up anonymously.

Keith agreed: “I think it will help. Men, being men, do not want to talk about it, but they will download it from the internet.”

The search for the youth who raped an 11-year-old girl in a supermarket toilet sparked hundreds of calls to a police incident room.

But in the end, police were helped by the fact the victim twice spotted him while she was being driven around town by her mother.

The victim’s mother, who can only be identified as Liz, told of how her daughter twice spotted him in town in the following fortnight.

“We were in the car and she was just chatting away to me. She suddenly just stopped talking as we passed him and said ‘did you see how he looked at me?’”

“I knew what she was going to say so I turned the car round but by the time we got there he had gone.

“The second time she just shouted out ‘there’s the attacker again’. She said, ‘are you going to stop the car?’”

But Liz said she just carried on driving and reported the incidents to police.

A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given nine years detention on Friday for raping the girl.

Det Ch Insp Adrian Pearson said: “I want to say how brave she has been. She played a crucial part in identifying the attacker.”

He added, however, that he was sure a distinctive jacket the attacker was wearing would have helped them trace him.

The teenager, arrested on 29 March, was a very dangerous young man, the detective added.

“We discovered a range of sexual dysfunction in his health spa treatment, things he had done to people in a social group or in his family circle,” Mr Pearson said.

“None of it was reported to police but it points to the fact he was a very dangerous young man.

“When he was arrested more than one adult in his family group said: ‘Yes, I immediately thought it would be him’.

“I make no comment about the fact that these people did not come forward to the police.”

‘Coolness of attacker’

A reward had been offered to encourage people to come forward, but no-one would receive it, he said.

The ferocity of the attack led Mr Pearson to assume the attacker would be an older person.

“Because of the severity of the attack and the coolness of the attacker I really thought it would be someone older and more man health care product,” he said.

“This person was very inexperienced which makes him more dangerous.”

The youngster had carried out minor sexual attacks on women both before and after the rape, but police said they did not know why he suddenly carried out a vicious attack.

“He had gone to the store to make purchases. He used the toilet and as he left he saw the victim going in.

“On the spur of the moment he decided to ‘do something sexual’ with her. He was suddenly prepared to rape her in a short period of time.”

The girl’s mother should not blame herself, he said.

“It is every parent’s worst nightmare. There is nothing a parent could have done. You can’t wrap children in cotton wool and how could anyone know this would happen.”

‘Lost trust’

Liz said she and her family were coping “day by day”.

“Now, I feel angry. How can someone of 15 take a child’s confidence away,” she said.

“She was a bubbly, nice, active, confident girl. She had a lot of confidence and would go anywhere on her own.

“Now she is not as bubbly. I think she has lost her trust in people.”

The pair still go shopping together although not as much to the Sainsbury’s store where it happened.

“I do blame myself to a certain degree. I keep asking if I could have been more careful.

“I sometimes see people letting their children go to the toilet and I want to stop them,” she said.
